Definition
UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL: utm_source (e.g. instagram), utm_medium (e.g. paid_social), utm_campaign (the campaign name) and optionally utm_content and utm_term. When a visitor arrives through that link, the source can be read by analytics tools and captured with form submissions.
UTMs work independently of any ad platform: you can use them on emails, influencer collaborations, QR codes or your bio link.
Why it matters for clinics
To know which campaign a website form lead came from, the UTM data has to be passed into the form and from there into the CRM. In a clinic without a consistent UTM naming convention, reports fill up with "other" and "unknown" sources and cost per patient can't be calculated.
Example
A clinic adds ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=implants_october to the link in its Instagram bio. When someone fills in the form from that link, the source is saved on the lead record and shows up as its own line in the attribution report.
