Cost per lead (CPL)

Ad spend divided by the number of leads it generated.

Definition

CPL (cost per lead) is the amount spent on a campaign divided by the number of leads it produced. If you spent $1,000 and got 100 form fills, your CPL is $10. Meta, Google and TikTok ad managers all report it by default.

CPL is quick to read, which is why marketing teams look at it most. But it only measures the top of the funnel. It tells you nothing about whether the lead replied, booked a consultation or went ahead with treatment.

Why it matters for clinics

In medical tourism a low CPL is often misleading. A campaign that brings cheap leads may be collecting people who never reply or whose budget doesn't fit. A clinic that optimises for CPL alone can end up with more forms and fewer patients. CPL should always be read alongside cost per patient.

Example

Campaign A brings 200 leads at an $8 CPL; campaign B brings 80 leads at $20. Pipeline data shows 3 patients from A paid a deposit, against 9 from B. Campaign B looks expensive on paper but is far cheaper per patient.
